STEADY RAIN
A WET WEEKEND SPORTS FIXTURES POSTPONED Over 2£- inches of rain were recorded over the weekend, which can be regarded as one of the wettest for the year. Rain which commenced on Saturday afternoon continued without a break until last night. As a result Whakatane spent Sunday indoors by the open fire. A number of hockey fixtures were postponed on account of the rain which was much heavier in the country districts than at Ohope and in the Borough. An unfortunate feature of the wet weather was the prolonged electricity shutdown. This was advertised from 10 a.m. till 3 p.m. but in reality the power was not restored until after 5 p.m. to the great inconvenience of farmers who are milking early herds, and to housewives throughout the district who were preparing an early tea. One farmer protested this morning that it was up to the Government to refund at least portion of the Radio License fee in view of the already shortened hours and the continual shutdowns which make the use of home radios impossible.
