DID YOU KNOW ?

THE RECENT RAINFALL 300 TONS TO THE ACRE An interesting quiz on the recent rainfall in Whakatane could be conducted along lines to discover the amount of water per acre which fell over the storm period last Thursday evening. The rain which fell during the three hours of heavy downpour measured approximately three inches. Most of our readers would be astounded to learn that this equals just 302 tons 19cwt. to the acre.

The above figure is based upon the scientific calculation that an inch of rain equals .100 tons 19cwt. of water. Thus section holders with their quarter acre sections in the Borough can reflect with a certain degree of awe that their own small patch had during the three-hours rain about 75 tons poured over it. How much this is represented in gallons can be based upon .the fact that a ton equals 224 gallons. Thus over one acre last Thursday evening the heavenly christening 1 amounted to just a small matter of 67,839 gallons. For the benefit of our quarteracre section h'older the gallonage on his home block would be a mere 16,960.

When we look smfigly at the 500 and 600 gallon-tanks attached to our Ohope baches or to our farm homesteads, we can dwell on the immensity of nature in reflecting that within the short space of an hour tens of thousands of gallons can be poured over every acre for hundreds of square miles.

Crippled Children’s Appeal

The appeal for funds conducted throughout the Whakatane district recently by the Crippled Children’s Society proved very successful, the public supporting the cause in a wholehearted and spontaneous manner. Although all moneys collected are not yet to hand, it is expected that the total will amount to somewhere in the vicinity of £IOO, part of which forms the donations of various schools throughout the district.
