Courageous Tuis Tuis are very courageous birds, states Forest and Bird. They have been seen to attack cats, and dogs even, and when one of them makes an attack he hurls himself with great speed at his foe. For a tui, attack is always the best defence. When a hawk appears a call is sounded and several tuis will join in a combined attack, the hawk generally being routed.
Menace of the .22 Rifle
The damage to native bird life, and the indirect damage to the bush, from the use of the .22 rifle is commented on in Forest and Bird. Recently parakeets were found shot on Mt. Holdsworth, and in parts such as South Westland where road making is in process, kakas, pigeons, and tuis, all-important in forest regeneration, are being slaughtered. The Society is advocating restriction of the introduction of small arms and small arms ammunition.
