RUGBY FOOTBALL

SATURDAY’S MATCHES Following are the matches to be played on Saturday, July 20:— Senior Whakatane Reps v Opotiki B, Domain (Mr J. Keepa). Junior Whakatane Reps v Thornton at Domain (Mr A. Breward). 3rd Grade Taneatua v Ruatoki at Taneatua (Mr A. Mitchell). High School v Huimai 'at Domain (Mr'C. Ross). OPOTIKI AND WHAKATANE Football supporters are reminded of the representative Rugby fixtures tomorrow afternoon, the most important of these is the HurunuiApanui Shield game at Opotiki between Rangitaiki and the holders' who have so far been unbeaten for two seasons. This should be a hard and interesting game, the outcome of which will have far-reaching effects in the local Rugby world. In Whakatane, Opotiki B Reps, will meet the local senior rep. fifteen. . From what we gather/ the visitors will be almost as strong as the first Opotiki reps., who-are contesting the Cup game. The local interest in this game is intense, as it will afford the first definite indication of Whakatane’s chances in its own challenge for the premiere Rugby trophy in a few weeks’ time.

PAROA v. WAIKITE JUNIORS The junior contest between Waikite and Paroa clubs took place on the No. 3 ground. The game was lively and interesting. In the first half, A. Anaru kicked two penalty goals from 30 and 40 yards respectively for Waikite, the latter being a splendid effort. Paroa scored

ties through E. Malaquin and M. Harawira, the former being converted by Tini Riini. In the second spell, Paroa had the advantage of the wind, which freshened. The highlight of the ..match—and of the day’s play on the ground—came with a passing rush initiated by C. Hakopa, who ran down the western

sideline passing infield to W. Horne, to J. Lafferty to E. Malaquin, who scored again after selling a dummy to three or four defenders. This made the tally 11—6 in favour of Paroa ,and there was no further score. Mr. G. Foote refereed.
