English Woman’s Gratitude
An indication of, the gratitude with which the people in England receive food parcels from New Zealand is given in a letter sent to the Mayor, Mr Allum, by a 77 year old woman in Peckham, London. “We pensioners here were given a victory treat,” she says. “We went to a picture and they gave us a parcel of six items, and it was such a nice surprise. It is the very first time I have ever had anything given me. I am a widow. I lost my husband 20 years ago and had to work for my living up to two years ago. I am living with my daughter and look after her home and children while she goes to work, as she is a war widow. Ido hope there are other people who may have written and thanked you for your kindness in thinking of us aged people.”
