AUSPICIOUS OPENING WEDNESDAY’S DRAW J The opening of the 1946 seagyß < of the Whakgtang Indoor Bas- j ketball Association on Wednesday last drew a big crowd of old , and new members, approximately sixty players participating, with many other prospective members being amongst the spectators. - Jf' With an assured membership of at least 80 active players, “the fastest game on foot” has been precipitated, to the position of one of the major ' sports in the district, and is to draw big crowds to the Winter Show Buildings when the competitions start tonight. Basic instruction was given last week by Miss Naim and Mr Jones, of Rotorua, the Physical Welfare - Officers for the Bay of Plenty. After ;• a few minutes, newcomers were given their first taste of the Ball Game, and made a very fine showing. One of the greatest advantages of this sport is that very few difficult rules need to be mastered and, players can join in with reasonable success from the start. . <

The Executive has drawn up a preliminary competition for the next few weeks, when teams chosen evenly from experienced players' and learners will be matched each week, , and new teams will be included as they become availabe. All men and women, who are interested in join--ing are urged to attend on the 17th and 24th, as it may be necessary, later, to close the membei’ship. The subscription, if paid within one week of joining, is only 5/-, probably the cheapest for any sport. The draw for Wednesday, July 17, is as follows:

Ladies 7 p.m. Kiwis v. United. 7.40 Matatau v. Salome. 8.20 Terrors v. Tuis. 8.40 Kiwis v. Matatau. 9.20 Terrors v. United. 10 p.m. Tuis v. Salome. j. Men 7.20 Gremlins v. Atomics. 8 p.m. Gymnasium v. Pirates ( 9 p.m. Atomics v. Gymnasium. 9.40 Pirates v. Gremlins. Four spells of 4 minutes each will be playgd with 2 minutes rest at half time, and 1 minute between, quarters . • • > Referees will be strict—4 personal fouls constituting disqualification of', the offending player for that game.
