Whakatane Sportsmen Whakatane will be represented at the forthcoming Dominion Champion shooting contest at Christchurch on July 25. The local Rod and Gun Club will be holding a friendly 'shoot' in the near future for the purpose of permitting the local reiresentatives to participate in a practice contest.
Gorse Ablaze The fire siren sounded a few minutes after mid-day yesterday, when a patch of gorse on a Government owned section in James Street was noticed ablaze. The engine attended, and the fire was extinguished without difficulty with beaters. The cause of the outbreak is unknown.
Motorists and School Crossings Referring to the pedestrian crossings at school entrances, Cr Good at a.st Monday's meeting of the Borough Council, said that from his own observations he could say that most notorists .showed no consideration for the children whatsoever. At noon the children played a regular game n dodging the vehicles across the road. Councillors expressed surprise, that the school patrol system was not operating as it had in the past. Borough Power Supply In response to the Borough Council's representation for a greater power allocation in view of the growing number of units on the existing mains the Minister of Works (Hon. R. Semple) has replied to the effect that if the council had reason to consider that development within the Borough demanded a higher "release of power it should submit its grounds to the Bay of Plenty Electric Power Board. The council decided to do this. « Ohope Spotlight Whether from a bus over or a car over, it was a walk-over for dance fans at the Cabaret last Saturday evening. Guided by Freddie Burt's excellent dance tempo, we spotted Mr and Mrs Whittaker, Mr and Mrs Robinson, Mr and Mrs Mexted, Mr nd Mrs J. Curtis, Misses Lois Moore, Herle Grover, Jean Grover, J'-annine Lodge, Betty Campbell/Audrey Butler, Madeleine Murray, Shirley Comskey, Mavis Hulquist - (Auckland), Inez Quigg and Miss Vehables. Parking Accident Failing to stop as it.pulled into the curb outside the Beacon Printing and Publishing Co's. office, ihe "Strand, on Monday, a truck driven by an elderly Maori mounted the >avement and' struck one' of the ■>osts supporting the verandah front- '• ng Patterson's Bargain Store. The post; which was rotten, snapped off at the base, and. was pushed in, letting the verandah sag in one corner. There was no other damage, and the vehicle sustained no damage. No onewas injured. Striking of Hospital Rate
Writing the Borough Council last Monday evening the secretary to the Municipal Association stated, that. n view of the recent statement by he Prime Minister, local authorities lad no alternative but to levy and collect the Hospital rate for 1946. The matter would be fully discussdby Parliament. Discussing the iibject His Worship the Mayor said hat although the council had al* eady struck its rates for the cur■ent year it was disappointing to earn that so little progress had been made. "The only thing to do," observed Cr Sullivan drily, "is to ask him to make whatever relief is, granted, retrospective."
