WHAKATANE DEFEATS OPOTIKI MIRIATA SHIELD MATCH A fast and spectacular match was witnessed at Opotiki when Whakatane (challengers) played Opotiki (holders) for the Miriata Shield. The game, ended dramatically with one goal separating the teams. Shortly after the commencement of the game Opotiki- were in the lead by four goals to Whakatane’s nil. Excellent passing and co-operative team play was witnessed in both teams. Whakatane quickly picked up and the score board read 5 all at half-time. Opotiki’s defence intercepted the ball from the Whakatane forwards on several occasions, the passes in this third being too long. Nancy Tauroa (Paroa) is to be commended on her shooting, two of her successful shots being taken from just inside the goal circle. The scbre was 11 all five minutes before the end of the. match when Phyllis Carter shot a goal making Whakatane the. winners.

Mrs Rowson (Whakatane) and Mrs Stephenson (Opotiki) refereed the match.

On behalf of the Opotiki Basketball Association, Mrs Cox the President, welcomed all the visiting teams and Mrs Potts, Patroness, presented Margaret Howat, captain of the Whakatane team, with the Shield. At the conclusion of the games the Opotiki teams served afternoon tea and on behalf of the Whakatane Association Mrs Grant thanked them for their hospitality.. Results of other matches played were: Whakatane Old Girls 12 v Opotiki B Reps. 12; Poroporo 9 v Opotiki Old Girls 5; St. Stephens 12 v Orini 11. The next challenge match for the Shield is to be played at Whakatane. Saturday’s Game ' All players travelling to Te Puke on Saturday are requested to be at the High School at 9.30 a.m.; Poroporo Store at 9.30 a.m.; Paper Mills corner at 9.45 a.m.; Matata at 10.30 a.m. Players selected from Taneatua, Edgecumbe and Awakeri will go by the Taneatua Express. Emergencies for teams have been selected as follows: M. Gow (Edgecumbe), J. Howat (Whakatane), K. Wineti (Pai'oa), M. Hotene (Poroporo), M. Moore (Whakatane).
