WHAKATANE HUNT CLUB
I • OPENING AT TANEATUA
; : SPORTSMEN FOREGATHER I . ; All roads led to Taneatua last , Saturday, where the opening hunt of the newly formed Wha- , katane Hunt Club took place. Well over a hundred followers participated, whilst the additional number of non-followers *; present must have brought the total to approximately double , that estimate. Saturday morning brought an ideal hunting day, -and the succession of horses , which continually arrived via trailers, trucks, in lead, and be- , ing ridden, lent the air an atmosphere unmistakeably connected with ‘the Hunt'. At 10.30 a.m., the some 200 perr. sons present, including many prominent huntsmeh and women from "Opotiki, Te Puke, Tauranga and the Waikato, sat down to the traditional .. Hunt Breakfast, which had been prepared in the Taneatua Hall. The •; tables, which had received the particular attention of the decorators, presented a festive appearance entirely in keeping with the delicious repast of cold meats, poultry and ; savouries which was served. Many of the visitors expressed the opinion 'that it was perhaps the best Hunt . Breakfast it had been their pleasure to attend, and added that the ladies responsible for the catering arrangements were indeed deserving of the of the company.

Dunstan opened the Hunt by taking the first jump. The road was lined with cars and a large crowd to watch the big field of Un horses over the fences. After crossing Mr Moody’s property a hare was raised on Mr Neil Reid’s land, but was lost near the priver. However another one was . { soon raised and led the Hunt at a fast pace through Mr Reid’s, Mr 'Grey’s, Mr Hayward’s and back to Mr Reid’s.
Hares were plentiful and after c several fast runs a kill was made on Mr Reid’s property. Enthusiasm Displayed
Great enthusiasm was displayed by the riders and not deterred by the strenuous pace continued with the excellent sport. Towards the end of the afternoon, a return to the hall was made for an excellent afternoon tea prepared and served by the ladies.
