TRACTOR TRANSPORT

DAMAGE TO ROADS COUNCIL GRANTS PERMISSION . An application by Messrs. Plank and Yardley for the right to drive crawler type tractors on County farm to farm gave rise to considerable discussion at the County Council meeting yesterday. The recommendation of the Works Committe was to the effect that the application be granted, applicants to be responsible for any damage to County roads, sealed roads to be crossed on planks—that applicants be advised this authority does not apply tp State Highways. Cr Luxton raised a warning that such types of tractors might cause considerable damage to the roads, not to mention some of the weaker County bridges. He was supported by Cr McGougan and Cr Cawte both of whom urged that the Council should not take the risk without further investigation.

Cr Butler pointed out that the tractors were destined to help the farmers and that the council should not stand in their way.

Cr Burt Jecried the assertion that any damage to the roads would result. It was absurd to say that a crawler tractor would do any more damage than a six-ton truck. Cr Luxton: What if they were licensed. Can they use the roads? The Chairman: At our pleasure. Cr Luxton: We are likely then to get an application from the whole lot. What are we going to do with a fleet of them on the roads? I think we should go more carefully into the matter and decide whether it is a wrong step or a right one to grant permission.

Cr McGougan thereupon moved that the whole question be referred back to the Works Committee for closer investigation. Cr McCready seconded. Cr Leslie said that from his own observations he could say that no damage to the roads occurred at all. Only the unmetalled sides of the road were used in any case. After considerable further discussion, the mover and seconder decided to withdraw their motion and allow the recommendation to stand with the addition that the Inspector advise tractor owners to keep to the side of the roads.
