AWAKERI GUIDES
SUCCESSFUL DANCE & SOCIAL GROWTH OF DISTRICT MOVEMENT The Awakeri Hall was the scene of plenty of gaiety and fun last Saturday evening when members of the local Girl Guide Company presented their first social and dance. The popularity of the function could be gauged by the splendid attendance of interested adults, who entering the spirit of the occasion thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Exhibition games by the Brownie Pack, plus the inclusion of competitions and the old-timer ‘Grand old Duke of York’ lent an informal air to the proceedings while the Guides themselves made splendid supper hosts and saw to it that everyone was entering into the fun. The whole evening can be described as a great success, much of which was due to the energetic organisation of the Guiders and to Mrs E. R. Roberts, of the local committee. Lively music was supplied by the Rhythm Vendors Band, while once again Mr Frank Malaquin carried out the duties of M.C. as only he can carry them out. At a suitable juncture Guide Barbara Bell thanked all present for their support and welcomed District Commissioner W. H. Rushbrook. The Commissioner in response expressed her great pleasure at the success of the gathering and wished the Company as a whole the greatest possible success. The County Commissioner for Scouts also spoke congratulating the Guides on their progress. Awakeri residents are fast becoming Guide-minded and by popular demand it is proposed to hold if possible in the near future a combined Guide and Scout social and dance upon somewhat similar lines. For the purpose of making it as central as possible this will probably be held at Edgecumbe.
