YOUNG FARMERS

THORNTON CLUB MEETING TWO DEBATES HELD The monthly meeting of the Thornrton branch of the Young Farmers’ Club was held in the Thornton Hall, some 18 club members and three guests being present. The meeting opened with general business which included the naming of the trophy donated to the Boy Scouts. The name decided upon was “The Big Brother Memorial Trophy.” A debate was held, the subject being: “Is the Forty Hour Week Applicable to Farms.” The speakers were Affirmative: T. Mexted and R. Schneller; Negative: J. Law and J. Adams. Mr I. B. Hubbard who acted as judge, gave his decision in favour of the negative team! A meeting was also held on May 19- when arrangements were made for a dance to farewell Y.F.C. members and sharemilkers leaving the district. The proceeds will be donated to the Thornton Hall alteration funds. A short speech was given by P. Jackson, a junior member of the club, his subject being “Why Tractors Are More Suitable to Farm Work Than Horses.” A debate was also held, the subject being: “Has the cinema an undesirable effect on the Moral Welfare of the Community.” The speakers were Affirmative: M. Law, R. Cleland and R. Cradock; Negative-. A. Martin, T. Shaw and J. Adams. Mr Jackson acted as judge giving his decision in favour of the negative.

The debating team to represent the club in the inter-club debating competition was also selected as follows: M. Law, R. Cleland and R. Craddock.
