REPAIRS EFFECTED

PAPER MILLS ALTERNATOR FULL PRODUCTION RESUMED In the early hours of the morning of Monday, January 14, an electrical fault occurred in one of the alternators in the power station of the Whakatane Paper Mills, as a result of which the machine was extensively damaged by fire. The breakdown was of serious consequences, for it meant that the power supply to the mill was cut in half, and production suffered accordingly.

A fortnight ago, the alternator, completely rewound and repaired, was reinstalled, and so far appears to be in perfect working order. The damaged part of the machine, weighing 10 tons 18cwt. was removed and forwarded to Wellington where the rewinding was done by one of the few firms in New Zealand capable of handling the job. The Mill possesses twin alternators, each capable of generating a capacity of 2500 kilowatts, or 3350 h.p. The breakdown of one, as a result, seriously cramped working operations, and it was imperative to have the repairs performed as quickly as possible in the interests of the industry and the outside demand. Full production has since been resumed.
