WORLD HOPE
EXEMPLIFIED IN U.N.R.R.A. THE GREEK VIEWPOINT ~ “Greece sees in UNRRA the first great manifestation of the spirit of international co-operation that we prayed for in the dark days,” remarked Archbishop Damaskinos, of the Greek Orthodox Church in a recsnt message from Greece to UNRRA Headquarters. The Archbishop described how the enemy had devastated his country, smashed all farm machinery, systematically destroyed most farm animals and beasts of burden, wrecked * communications and left the land bare. When the Germans finally withdrew famine, illness and disease remained. “It was then our comrades in arms came to us through the organisation of UNRRA. And through UNRRA friends of many lands contributed generously of their own food and clothing and literally saved the Greece people from starvation. The realisation and operation of a great international organisation based on the Golden Rule has deeply moved the Greeks.” New Zealands share of the first contribution to UNRRA amounts to some £2,600,000. Bii'c distinct from this, is the need for voluntary assistance, handled by the CORSO organisation. CORSO has sent voluntary gifts and goods, as well as volunteer workers, to Greece. To continue this service, and maintain the teams of voluntary workers, CORSO is appealing for funds. Street days and other forms of appeal are being held throughout New Zealand. Donations and gifts may be sent to the nearest CORSO committee, or direct to CORSO, P.O. Box 11, Government Buildings Post Office, Wellington.
