YOUNG CALEDONIANS

McLEOD CLAN ENTERTAINS

BRIGHT EVENING STAGED The Whakatane Caledonian Society’s junior section (Young Peoples Club) staged the first of its Clan evenings last Saturday, when approximately a hundred assembled in the hall as guests of the McLeod Clan, under the leadership of Chieftain W. Abbott. The gathering was a distinct success and a genuine credit to the young people concerned.

Piped in by its own piper (Russell Hurst) the clan was greeted with applause as it entered the hall and took over the running of the programme. Dancing and items succeeded each other in swift succession and all agreed that the McLeods had made an excellent job as hosts, and are looking forward to the next gathering when we understand the stalwarts of Clan Murray will share the honours.

An historic play, ‘Flora McDonald’s Farewell to the Bonny Prince’ was a highlight in the programme the caste being as follows: Flora McDonald, Nova Ranby; The Bonny Prince, Colin Ranby; Donald, George Ramson; Kathleen, Coleen Miles; Jeannie, Lucy Hurst. The play concluded with the solo ‘Over the Sea to Skye’ beautifully rendered by Miss Dorothy Stewart. A laughable comic farce, the Army Alphabet went tops with the audience and fairly brought the house down. Those taking part were Sgt. McWhiskey, Gordon Dines; Pte. McBagpipe, Maynard Ramson; Pte. McWhustle, Ron Seebeck; Pte. McBugle, George Ramson and Pte. McToot, Don McKenzie. This interlude Was excellently portrayed and thoroughly enjoyed. Pipe items were given by Russell Hurst and Pipe-major D. Paterson, while several warmly appreciated solos were contributed by Miss Dorothy Stewart. Music for the dancing was provided by the clan pipers and musicians, while supper was in the capable hands of a team of McLeods under Miss Nellie McLeod Rivett.

An interlude of ‘yes’-‘no’ in which members of the senior Society were called forward and submitted to the tender mercies of Drum-major H. Mole, caused considerable amusement.

At the conclusion, Chieftain Abbott, who wore the kilt well, thanked all those present for their attendance and expressed the hope that future clan evenings would be suecessful and popular.
