SHORTAGE OF MAIZE
FUTURE PROSPECTS NOT BRIGHT
Maize is in very short supply in New Zealand at present and very little will be available for consumption until the commencement of harvesting of the new crop in June. Even then the amount will be very limited. Last season it was estimated that the crop was some 35,000 sacks short of actual requirements. The area planted this season in the Bay of Plenty was not much larger than in the previous year but in Gisborne there was a greater increase. The season in both bays which are the main growing areas in the Dominion has been most unfavourable. Hopes are entertained that despite the poor growing conditions the crQp will be up to last season’s production, but there appears to be some doubt whether this will eventuate. Users of maize during the next two months or so will have to make do with substitute cereals.
