QUARTERLY RETURNS

SHARP INCREASE SHOWN

Following are the quarterly retui’ns of vital statistics, as obtained from the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages:—

It will be noticed in connection with the above, that a sharp increase, particularly in the number of deaths is recorded during the first three months of 1946, when compared to the figures for the same months of 1945. Court Figures The Clerk-of Court, Whakatane, reports the following information dealing with criminal and civil court actions during January, February and March of 1946: Total fines—£B4 ss. Total costs—£27 15s 6d. Number of Plaints entered—2s.

Total amounts sued for—£334 3s 6d Total amount recovered—£23s 3s 6d.

Of the fines and costs, £7 5s have been received by local bodies for actions brought on their behalf. Generally speaking, civil court work is on the increase, whilst that under the criminal headings, shows a steady decline.
