MAORI BEFORE COURT
THREE CHARGES PREFERRED
ONE MONTH’S -IMPRISONMENT
Whilst several thousand people from all parts of the district were attending the race meeting at Te Teko on April 13, Hapi Hori, a Maori of Edgecumbe, was otherwise employed. His actions on that day, found sequel in the Whakatane Court on Wednesday, when he found himself facing three charges concerning theft and mischief. Messi’s. G. A. Brabant and J. King J.P.s, were on the Bench.
Individually, the charges preferred were that of stealing two cartons of beer valued at £2 15s; committing mischief by causing damage to the extent of £1 to a bach at Edgecumbe; and stealing a suitcase and contents valued at £6, the property of Miss A. G. Jones.
Accused, who pleaded guilty ' to all counts, was convicted and discharged on the first two charges. With regard to the last offence, Sergeant Farrell stated that the case in question had been left by the owner in a paddock. On her return she had discovered that it was missing. Its whereabouts had later been traced to Hori, and the property recovered.
Sentence of one month’s imprisonment was imposed.
