PHYSICAL WELFARE

GOVERNMENT FUNDS AVAILABLE At the last meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council, His Worship the Mayor (Mr B. S. Barry) reported that he had recently learned that the Government was making available funds under the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act 1937, for grant or subsidy to Local Bodies and Sports Bodies.

A form of application had been procured and the matter had been discussed with the Local Departmental Officer, Mr C. Jones. He suggested that application be made for a grant towards the provision of combined basketball and tennis courts at the Whakatane Domain, and that the Basketball Association and the defunct Tennis Association be asked for a contribution of funds, and the Government be asked to provide the balance required. It was resolved that the ForemanEngineer be instructed to prepare a specification and estimate of the proposal and that the Clerk contact the Basketball Club and the trustees of the defunct Tennis Club, and complete and forward the application to the Minister.
