OHOPE SIDE SCHOOL
REPLY FROM BOARD SUGGESTED EDUCATIONAL RESERVE
At the last meeting of the Whakatane School Committee, held on Wednesday evening, a letter was received from the Board stating that with regard to the offer of the Ohope Church Hall at a rental of £1 per week for use as a side school at the beach, it had approved a report from Mr Bell (member of the Board who visited Whakatane recently and inspected the proposed building) recommending the establishment of a side school at Ohope, and had asked the Education Department, Wellington, for the necessary authority to proceed with the matter. A rough sketch of a permanent school site at Ohope, as proposed by
Mr Bell on his recent visit, prepared and forwarded by Mr T. P. Dowling was received by the committee. The plan showed an area of some two and a half acres at the rear of the Church Hall, consisting of Native Department property. Saying that Mr Bell'had already forwarded a recommendation to the Department to procure the property, the chairman (Mr J. W. Wilson) described the site which it was intended to purchase. It was, he said, an ideal position for a school, situated on a large area of level ground, at the top of a rise overlooking the beach. The Board itself, was 1 enthusiastic about the proposition. It was decided to forward the plan to the Department, with the recommendation that th 6 land be acquired immediately as an educational reserve.
