ACCIDENT IN STRAND

CAR AND CYCLE COLLIDE

RIDER’S FORTUNATE ESCAPE

An accident occurred at the junction of Commerce Street and the Strand, opposite the Rock on Tuesday afternoon shortly before one o’clock, when a car driven by Mrs T. Hall, of Whakatane, in attempting to avoid a cyclist, mounted the curb on the right hand side of the road, and struck a telegraph pole.

The car was proceeding out of town and the cyclist, a young Maori boy was going in the opposite direction, apparently on the wrong side of the road. In attempting to avoid one another, both turned in the same direction. The cycle struck the left hand side of the car, which then mounted the curb, and came to rest with the left hand front mudguard crashed against the pole. Neither driver nor cyclist was hurt, though the latter had a miraculous escape.

The car sustained damage to one mudguard. No glass was broken.
