DROWNING FATALITY
MAORI YOUTH THE VICTIM
RANGITAIKI RIVER ACCIDENT A drowning accident occurred on Monday afternoon when a Maori youth, Thomas Brown, aged 18 years, of Makaraka, Gisboriie, in attempting to swim across the mouth of the Rangitaiki River, was swept out to sea. Two companions, seeing that he was in difficulties, made an attempt to rescue him, but were unable to do so. The body was carried out to sea, but was recovered at 6 p.m. on the beach some distance south of the river mouth. The inquest for identification purposes was opened on Tuesday afternoon before Mr G. A. Brabant J.P., in the absence of the District Coroner, Mr C. S. Armstrong, and adjourned.
