SCHOOL COMMITTEE
OIIOPE QUESTIONS DISCUSSED
MATTER OF TRANSPORT At the last meeting of the Whakatane School Committee which took place on Wednesday evening, a number of matters pertaining to Ohope children were raised. The Side School issue was once again discussed after a letter had been received from the Presbyterian Church Council stating that it was prepared to let the Mission Hall at the Beach for the pum of £1 per week. The Chairman (Mr J. W. Wilson) said that the Board had already been notified of this.
A report from the Headmaster (Mr I. B. Hubbard) which was received by the committee stated that there were now 69 children travelling to and from Ohope by the school bus, which also carried passengers. Many of the children were forced to travel in extreme discomfort, and the bad state of the road made travelling under those conditions unsafe.
Mr Paterson proposed that the committee should contact the Traffic Inspector and ask him to point out the position to the Board.
The Chairman agreed but added that it was not the driver’s fault. The committee agreed to carry out the proposal to contact the Traffic Inspector. A further note from the Headmaster was that the committee suggest to the Board the advisability of purchasing a piece of land at the Beach, with an eye to establishing a permanent school sometime in the future. Even the present roll of 69 children, he said, would warrant three teachers and a headmaster, and now was the time to procure the land. Some discussion took place and the matter was held over.
