SUBSTANTIAL CLAIM
MAORI WORKER’S DEATH
SEQUEL TO SODIUM ACCIDENT
The State Fire and Accident Insurance Comany notified the Whakatane County Council at its meeting last Tuesday that Messrs. Cooney and Jamieson, Solicitors of Tauranga, had advised the N.Z. Counties Association that acting on behalf of the dependants of Pure Rore and J. Takotahiwi the two victims in the sodium accident last year, they would be claiming in common law in both cases. A figure of £2500 in Rore’s case had been mentioned but nothing in connection with Takotahiwi. Formal notice would be served on the County in due course.
Discussing the matter the chairman ( Mr J. L. Burnett) said that the Council was insured against accidents to its employees. He understood that the claim for Takotahiwi would also be substantial owing to the permanent damage to his skin.
