MAORI REGATTA
SATURDAY’S NOVEL EVENT
The Whakatane Harbourside on Saturday next, will be the scene of the first Maori Regatta staged in this town for many years. The details are all completed, and indications are for a splendid aquatic display in which canoe races, in traditional Maori fashion over hurdles, and swimming races will be included in a programme which, it is claimed, will be hard to beat. The first event is set down for 11 a.m. and from then till approximately 3 p.m., there will be a nonstop timetable of interesting and keenly contested events. No little trouble has been encountered by the committee in securing canoes of suitable strength and buoyancy to participate, but there are at least five in which the crews have already been training assiduously over the past few weeks. The usual Maori haka, poi and waiata teams will be in attendance, and a Maori hangi will provide' the necessary refreshments. In short, everything points to a highly colourful and successful day.
