THE WATER RESTRICTIONS
NEED FOR CONSERVATION LIMITED STORAGE ACCOMMODATION We have been asked to explain by His Worship the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, that the need for placing greater restrictions on the u« water within the Borough was dictated by two main reasons. One is that* the reservoir is designed to carry only 180,000 and that incessant pumping is needed to ex\able the daily consumption of gallons which is demanded during the drought period, and the second is the need to conserve water for
fire Tighting purposes which constitutes a very real threat at the present time.. Whakatane has been almost ringed by distant bush fires during the past fortnight and.should a fire by any chance interrupt the power supply to the the Avlioie of the pumpjng service, would cease, and the water would imme-. diately have to be rationed. The average person in the Borough has been using water at the rate of 114 gallons per head during the dry spell and by cutting out the use of hoses in the evenings the Council is not inflcting any undue hardship upon householders, who c,o— with other towns and districts" on the East Coast are still receiving a very liberal supply.
