FIXTURE FOR 26th

BOROUGH COUNCIL’S SUPPORT

Warm encouragement for the

Maori Committee now engaged in the promotion of the regatta on the Whakatanc Harbour on Saturday January 2(i was forthcoming from the Borough Council last Monday evening A\hcn application Avas made from flic- secretary, T. Horopapara for the right to rope off portion of the harbour side for the purpose of accommodating spectators.

Cr Crcekc said that .the endeavour was to promote a straightout Maori river sports along the lines of the earlier Whakatane regattas.

There would also lie Maori dances and hakas.

The Mayor said lie was pleased to note the movement .vhieh should do much to stimulate Maori interests in the Borough. Crs Warren and Shaplcy were

also in warm support the latter stating that if the regatta could capture the atmosphere of the old ones it would be well worth seeing. The Council should do all in its power to assist. Full permission was granted.
