Controlling Rabbit Pest
At-the last meeting of the. Poiigakawa Rabbit Board i( the secretary reported that Die special grant of £238 for fumigation authorised by the Department of Agriculture had now been expended. Ohope Swimming Pool
As a result of a special effort by residents the swimming pool at Ohope has been in commission for the holidays. The children's paddling pool at the end of the main bath has been available all the time and is a popular rendezvous for the smaller children on tire beach.
'Rush' on House Advertisement The acute shortage of houses in the town was again exemplified last week when in answer to a single advertisement oll'ering a house for sale there were no less than fifty replies, over the weekend. In the same issue a 'bach for exchange' was also offered. This advertisement brought practically as many enquiries.
Two Houses Burnt An unusual and unfortunate coincidence'occurred over the New Year holidays at Ohope Beach, when two groups of campers, one from Wellington and the other from Hamilton learnt within a few hours of each other that their respective homes had been burnt down in their absence. Both parties hastily dismantled their camps and hastened home.
Motor Accidents
Two motor accidents have been fortunately without injury to any of the occupants. On New Year's Eve a car left the road opposite the saleyards near the. Whakatane Bridge and turned over. Qn Wednesday another car, the property! of Mr Tunnicliffe of Lake Rotoehu left the Ohope road on Swaney'g hill and though it fell some considerable distance was practically undamaged.
Golden Wedding at Ohope Mr and Mrs F. Mahy Sen., celebrated, their Golden Wedding anniversary at Ohope during the Christmas holidays. The well known family rallied, without exception to the Mahy homestead on the picturesque promontory opposite the camp store and the 'bride and groom' found themselves literally walled in by the swarm of lusty grandchildren which had mustered. The occasion was one for mutual rejoicing, merry-making and and the toast list was duly honoured in traditional manner.
A Friendly Hawk Whilst travelling down the Maraetotara Gorge road to Whakatane a party of local motorists encountered a full-grown hawk standing on the side of the roadway. As it did not attempt to ily away as the car ap r proached the driver stopped close to the bird thanking it was injiured. For some minutes his passengers were, engaged in making friendly overtures to the bird which made no attempt to fly off and regarded the car and its occupants in an extremely nonchalant manner. It was only when the driver alighted and went toward the bird that it finally backed away and flew off.
