COURSE OF STATE HIGHWAY
ROTORUA-WHAKATANE ROUTE EDGECUMBE TO BE BIvPASSED Writing the County Council last Tuesday ? the. P. W.D. advised that it was. the proposed future policy of the Main Highways Board to ultimately deviate the Rotorua-YVhaka-tane State Highway, to the Te TekoAwakeri road. The. existing State Highway through Edgccumbe would then Jieeome an ordinary highway though the Main Highways Board was prepared to erect the new river bridge at the township at full cost to itself. Cr MeCracken: Have you any information about Ihe Tauranga route yet ? The Chairman: I think that will remain as at present. There is nothing definite. ft looks as though Kdgecumbe will be. definitely bythough it is a great tiling to learn that the new bridge will be built entirely at the Board's expense. Cr McCracken said that the diversion of the main route to the back road to Awakeri would cau.se considerable. inconvenience to Edgecumbe residents who depended upon the bus services to a large extent, lie hoped that passenger services would continue to call at the township. The chairman said that in all probability there would be fccder-ser-vices established which would serve the town. The objective of the services to Gisborne w r as however to get there with the least del ay ? and the route would probably be adhered to. It was decided to thank the Department for its information and to express appreciation of the Board's decision to build the new bridge.
