AMATEUR SWIMMING
WHAKATANE CLUB'S OPENING REGATTA UNSEASONAL WEATHER MARS DISPLAY An unfortunate spell of unscasonal weather somewhat marred, the opening held by the Whakatane Amateur Swimming Club at 'Pirates Rock' (Strand Extension) on Saturday afternoon. Local interest in the organisation was evidenced by the large crowd of spectators who, despite tile overcast and threatening sky, turned out to witness the events. Those races Avhich were run consisted of a Junior Girls event ) a Junior Boys event j and a Senior Men's event (< heats and finals being held in each case. Owing to the rain, which commenced to fall at approximately 3 p.m. the diving was not held. The following results were recorded:— Junior Boys Event—Heat 1: C. lulara 1; J. Miles 2; Needham 3. Heat 2: T. Stewart 1; A. Murphy 2; Butler 3. Heat 3: Goodall 1; Dines 2; Chadwick 3. Final: Goodall (20 2-ssecs) 1: Stewart 2; Murphy 3. Junior Girls E'vent: J. Chadwick 1; F. -O'Rourke 2; M. Hurndell) 3. Men's Event—Heat 1: Farland 1; A. Moore 2; R. Goodall 3. Heati 2: Brown 1; Comer 2; Abbot 3. Heat 3: Morpeth 1; Taylor and Luxton 2. Final: Farland (23 2-ssecs) I;- Moore 2.
