URGENT DISTRICT NEED In response to the Whakatane County Council's representations urging the appointment of an Inspector of Stock in the Whakatane district the Minister of Agriculture has replied pointing out that the district extended from the Rangi_ taiki River practically up to Cape Runaway, and to give effect to the council's, suggestion would result in a considerable amount of "dead" running. There was a large stock population south and cast of Opotiki f and the Department was required to give as efficient a service as possible to farmers in this area. It was realised that the Inspectors of Stock at Tauranga and Opotiki were experiencing great difficulty in meeting the calls on their serdue principally to the size of their and it was envis. aged when the manpower position was less acute, a separate district would be established for the Whakatane County, with headquarters possibly at Whakatane. The De. partment was still labouring under considerable staffing difficulties, five districts at present being without Inspectors. The council could rest assured that every consideration would be given the needs of its but this could not be undertaken until staff became available.
