ROWING SEASON

WHAKATANE CLUB'S PROSPECTS

SUCCESSFUL OPENING DAY

In s-pite of the very unsettled weather the Whakatane Rowing Club made a good start over the weekend. Quite a Mir crowd turned out to sec the boys at their best. The children's races held on tlie crass were well patronised especially when the kiddies found that there was an ice cream for all starters. A very tasty afternoon tea was provided by a willing band of lady helpers. The Boys' Band was also in attendance and between events gave some excellent items. The club is most grateful to Mr Jarrett and his team of excellent young bandsmen for their services. A feature of the day was the presence on the water of a large number of men who have returned from overseas during the last few months. Seeing these members on the river again was reminiscent of pre-war days. The races went off very w r ell and were quite evenly contested. In fact, all indications point to there being a lot of promising material in the shed to represent the club at the forthcoming regattas throughout the Auckland Province. Amongst those present as spectators were some of the foundation members of the club and it was interesting to note that it was 33 years on the 22nd of this month since the first boat took <thc vater from the clubhouse in Whakatane.
