THE COUNTRY QUOTA
RANGITAIKI FARMERS PROTEST MEETING AT EDGECUMBR Mr W.. A. McCracken presided at a public meeting of farmers and residents held at Edgecumbe last evening for the purpose of discussing the Government's attitude in prosing to abolish the 'Country Quota' and to decide what action should lie taken. Mr lan B. Gow moved, and Mr Roy Butler seconded the.- following resolution which was carried with a few dissentients:—
"That this reii resen tative meeting of the residents of the Rangitaiki Plains protest very strongly against the action of the Government 'in forcing through immediately prior to a Genera] Election legislation which would appear to be designed chiefly to prolong its- own life— legislation which seriously . a;Tects the interests of Rural areas ? and asks that tiie Electoral Reform Bill at present before Parliament be held up until the matters contained in it are made either the subject of a referendum or one of the planks of Government Pc l: cy at the forthconu ing election."
A second resolution moved by Mr C. R. Wilson and seconded by Mr Don Butler was as under:— "This meeting pledges itself to support any action thought fit to be taken by the Leader of the Farming Industry in opposing the proposal to abolish the Country Quota."
