SMALL AREAS OF LAND

INTENSIVE CULTIVATION

The intensive cultivation by exservicemen of small areas surrounding their homes as an adjunct to their usual employment has u in certain the approval of the Rehabilitation Board, says a statement from the Rehabilitation Department. A decision to that effect was recently made by the Board on the recommendation of its Farms Advisory Committee. It was decided that in appropriate cases where an applicant was eligible for a housing loan and was capable of intensely cultivating a small area, he be financially assisted. A provision was made that he should satisfy the local rehabilitation committee that he' had reasonable prospects of successfully combining his outside employment opportunities with the cultivation work. The limit for advance of this nature was fixed at £2 000: 9 "Appropriate cases" were defined as those concerning applications l'rom men with permanent pensions, long service or large seasonal casual rural workers or men with some special claim which would justify an advance beyond. the. normal £1500 housing loan limits. It was also decided that all such applications should be referred to the farming s-üb.committees for decision as to whether the applicants had the necessarj T qualifications.
