WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT THORNTON

The monthly meeting of the Thornton Women's Institute was held on Thursday, October 11. The meeting opened in the usual way, apologies were received and the roll call A School Boy Howler, was well responded to and caused much amusement. The secretary, Mrs then gave a neat comprehensive report of the Bi-annual Council meeting at Waimana aiul Mrs Withy, the popular gave an interesting account of her experience during the Taraweva Eruption. The president, Mrs Robb ex, pressed the appreciation of the meeting and presented the speaker with a shoulder spray. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Adams Arbuclde and BrashJ ier. Competitions resulted as follows:— Best flower: Mrs Bell 1; Mrs Schncl-' ler 2. Best vegetable: Mrs Bell 1; Mrs Carson 2. Vase of spring flow, ers: Mrs Goodwin and Mrs McDonI tied, 1; Mrs Watts 2. New garment from something ol$: Mrs Mc j Donald 1; Mrs Keighley 2. Sponge cake without butter, produced so -many perfect sponges that judging was very difficult. Miss Symons was given highest points and Mrs McDonald Mrs Branch and Mrs Watts equal 2.
