ANNUAL STEEPLECHASE

NEW RECORD SET

The annual steeplechase contested by the boys in the secondary department of the Whakatane District High School was held last Wednesday afternoon. With fine conditions and a cool breeze blowing the day was an ideal one for the race. Once again it was held in two the juniors running a shorter course than the seniors.

Thirty-two juniors faced the start, er, the first boys getting away seven minutes before, the scratch runners. One of the G. Missen was able to maintain the and win comfortably by over half a minute. Next in order came R. Wicks E. Maddern (s%min) and P. Parsons (3%min) third equal and J. Chadwiclv (%min)» The lat_ ter put up the fastest time } 21min 31secs ? setting a new record for the distance.

The seniors started almost as soon as the juniors were all away, the scratch man in this case conceding 9 minutes to the limit markers. The winner of last year's, junior event, T. Lyon (3%) was- first in followed by T. Martin (Smin) ? R. Mayo (4%min) 7 P. Comiskey (4% min) and R. Haslam (4/Mjmin). Fastest time w r as registered by B. Skelton from scratch who ran the course in 27min 42secs —not quite as good a performance as the record established last year by K. Sullivan.
