MAORI R.S.A.
IN Whakatane is domiciled the headquarters of a group within the Returned Services' > Association known as .ne '2nd N.Z.E.F. Maori Association.' This organisation draws its membership from' the widespread Matatua tiibal fedeiation which populates most of the Eastern Bay and .~e Urewera back country. The tribe concerned is singularly r>roud of its record of service and unswerving loyalty to tne Crown, while its war effort generally will stand comparison with any other Maori community in the Dominion. Matatua suffered a, heavy casualty rate on the various fro "ts possibly the greatest being the deat;h m action 01 the late Lieutenant George Tamerau. son of the paramount Chief Takarua Tamerau of Ruatoki. One of the hrst measures of the new organisation will doubtless be erection of a suitable memorial to those who made trie supreme sacrifice.
