LOCAL BUSINESSMAN HONOURED
A representative gathering of some forty local businessmen met in the lounge of the Commercial Hotel last Wednesday eA r ening to do honour to Mr Sam Armstrong Snr. on the eA*e of his retirement from active business and his removal to Lake Rotoma. Mr Armstrong avlio has been actively associated Avith many of the town's social and commercial movements over a long period of years. ? and avlio is Avell knoAvn through his thriving jeAvellery business intends handing over his establishment to his son Mr Hugh Armstrong, recently returned from OA'erseas. Warm tributes to both Mr and Mrs Armstrong and the family they had reared were expressed by the Mayor, Mr 13. S. Barry_ and Messrs. A. J. Canning H. G. Len Luke ? W. Jarrett, W. Bridger and Ray Ferry. In response Mr Armstrong stated that lie and e\*ery member of his family counted it a great pleasure and priA'ilege to be associated Avith the people of Whakatane. and district, amongst AAdiom they had made so manj' friends They Avould not be going very far away and would still be in a position to maintain those friendships and to be near their family. The presentation of a fireside armchair Avas made to Mr Armstrong by Mr Barry, Avho expressed the hope that it Avould serve to remind him of the good Avishes of his many friends in Whakatane.
