VARIETY CONCERT

BRIGHT EDGECUMBE PROGRAMME

PLUNKET SOCIETY BENEFITS

Patrons of the Variety Concert held in the Etlgecumbe Hall last week were privileged to witness a wealth of talent. Under the auspices of the Rangitaiki Sub-branch of the Plunket Society, the function attracted a packed house and the appreciation of the programme was reflected in unstinted applause.

Mr W. Rushbrook in his render, ing of two pianoforte solos proved himself a master of his instrument and as accompanist to the singers demonstrated an ability that is all too rare. The singing of Mesdames Armstrong and Rushbrook as ever •delighted the audience. Two recitations by Mrs V. Peck reached her usual high standard and deserved the applause they received.

A play "The Willing Horse" produced by Mrs J. B. in wliieh members of the Etlgecumbe Women's Institute took part also unearthed a wealth of talent, and was a tribute to the cast for their keenness and appreciation. Particularly meri_ torious was the performance of Mrs C. Malpas, who as "Mrs King;" can be said to have really lived her part. A touch of burlesque was added to the programme, when six members of the Institute presented an action song "Daisy Belle-" Whether or not i ( t was the men's hard knockers and drooping moustaches' or the ladies crinolines that intrigued the audience is hard to but applause brought tliem back to repeat this iltem.

Always relied upon to provide something new that popular entertainer Mr Hans Avas in top form, brimming Avith good humour and lightning sketches.

The Whakatane Institute presented a play "One Tavo Brides" produced by Mrs J. Hepburn. Here again a high standard was achieved by all players with perhaps honours to Mrs Crozier (Bride's Mother) and Mrs CantreU (Helen).

The entertainment value throughout the programme Avas- maintained at a high level and organisers and artists are to be congratulated on the type of performance that could Avell be repeated at more frequent

intervals.
