SOLDIERS' PLOTS
GRASS CEMETERY PLANS \ BOROUGH COUNCIL'S APPROVAL For the purpose of discussing the laying out of tbe^soldiers' : plot in the new Hillcrest Cemetery as a lnwn cemetery Messrs L. Brown and C. A. Head waited on the Borough Council at its meeting last evening. Mr Brown stated that in order to liav* the section in agreement with other soldiers plots throughout New Zealand, a lawn cemetery compris-' ed a general levelling and grassing of the whiole site. It was proposed to establish in red j llowers or shrubs the letters 'U.S.A. Burial Plot.' To ma'ke these alterations it would be necessary to remove certain of the existing pathways but when, this was done the idea was to have a concrete slab over each grave Hush with the ground level with a brass plate inset bearing the name and number of the deceased. The estimated cost was from £1200 to £150\0 and the whole of this cost together with the maintenance in perpetuity would be borne by the Government,
Mr Head said that it was estimated that the existing plot would carry fiUO graves in all.
When the deputation withdrew, all Councillors declared, themselves favourably disposed, towards the scheme and it was decided to notify the Association that the Council gave the proposal its fullest sanction providing the Foreman-Engineer was consulted, in the question of layout.
