BEACON SOCIAL GATHERING MARKING PROGRESS OF PAPER A particularly happy gathering of members of the BEACON staff and their wives took place last Friday -evening when alter a dinner at the. Commercial a social hour or two was passed in toasting the fact that after six years operations the •company was now jjroud of the fact that it possessed the goodwill of -over 1500 subscribers throughout the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Stories and reminiscences were indulged in ? the whole atmosphere being completely informal and designed to bring officers and staff into closer contact and joint co-operation. The success of the ■gathering was borne out by a common decision to make the celebration .an anual one and to cultivate, still further the same friendly social tone. Stories relative to the 'press' and the printing trade generally made for plenty of particularly those with a bearing on tile local printing office, where humorous interludes have apparently been of faMy frequent occurrence". Responding to the toast of the 'Company the Chairman of Directors Mr John Patterson referred to ■» > the man who pioneered the. com-« pany the late Mr Frank and said it gave him deep pleasure to recognise the fact that in spite of the difficulties of the war vcars the BEACON had steadily consolidated and had met with such a good reception in town and district. He referred to the fact that the staff had of its own volition decided to carry on and work through during 'V.J.' and expressed his persona] ;appreciation.

Mr L. R. Spring ) Secretary to the briefly outlined the facts leading up to its the decision to publish a trinweekly and the appearance of the first 'Beacon' in Whaka^ane. The toast list was as under: "The Company' Mr C. A. Suckling and Mr J. Patterson; 'The Staff' Mr C. Kingsley-Smith and Mr F. Darvill; 'Advertisers and Readers' Mr C. A. Suckling and Mr L. R. Spring; 'Roll of Honour' Mr J. Jessop; 'The Ladies' Mr Leo Deiahunty and Mrs L. R. Spring. Auld Lang Syne concluded a most enjoyable evening.
