WAIMANA MAN GUILTY

TWO YEARS' PROBATION

Two charges of carnal knowledge of a .girl oi' 14 years of age and alternative counts of indecent assault were brought against Bertie William Hughes farmer j aged 30 (Mr Allan J. Moody) before Mr Justice Cornish in the Auckland Supreme Court last Friday. The offences were alleged to have been, committed at Taneatua on September 21, 1944 and at Waimana on March 31 this year t said the Crown Prosecutor Mr V. R. Meredith. Tlie defence was a denial of the allegations and the accused gave evidence supporting this denial. The jury found accused guilty on both carnal knowledge counts. His Honour admitted him to probation for two years special conditions being that he pays £25 towards t,he cost of the prosecution enters into an agreement for the maintenance of the child and keeps away from the girl until she is over 16.
