FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL MATCHES AT TAURANGA The Whakatanc High Scliool football and basketball teams met their match when they recently travelled to Tauranga to play teams representing the District High School. The first fifteens of both schools had an unbeaten record until they met on this occasion to decide what is virtually the secondary schools' championship of the Bay of Plenty. Against faster and more experienced opponents the

local boys could not repeat their victory of last year. The Whakatane forwards played a splendid and were almost a match for the. Tauranga pack for the first three-quarters of the garae ( during which they kept the score down to 11-— O. Then the extra weight of their opponents began to tell however, and the Tauranga J team piled on another 18 points. The Whakatane backs could not handle with their usual precision, and simply did not have the pace to cope with their opposite particularly the speedy three-quarter Nicholls ? who scores three tries and converted one; on one occasion he ran from his own 25 to score a try. Whakatane was awarded four or fiVe times as many penalties as but Davis was not in his usual form, and kicked only one goal. In a game between the second fifteens the Whakatane team was not quite so heavily but was defeated by 19 points to three. Whakatane's points came from a try by L. Goodall, who secured the ball in a loose rush and made a determined solo run of 25 yards to score. Girls Do Better Fn the basketball tournament Whakatane A was drawn iirst against Tauranga. The visiting team took some time to settle down, allowing Tauranga to score 4 goals in the first few minutes of the game. After that, the match was more evenly contested but Tauranga managed to keep the lead. Whakatane lost the ball to the other side: underneath their own goal on a number of occasions by passing instead of taking quite easy shots at goal* This lost them a number of possible points. Against Katikati the Whakatane team did not meet such strong opposition, and had a fairly easy win. The best players in the Whakatane. team were Kura Ngaire Doherty and June Riddell.
