RUGBY FOOTBALL

THE SENIOR FIELD PAROA v POROPORO The senior game between Paroa (yellow and black) and Poroporo (blue) resulted in a walkover for Paroa who scored 32 points to Poroporo's nil. The game was fast particularly on the Paroa side where the whole fifteen played with a speed and dash which was good to watch. Paroa line work was also first class and the co-ordination of the team had Poroporo running round in particularly for the first 15 minutes in which Paroa piled up 16 points. By halftime, Paroa had put 24 points on the. while Poroporo had failed to score.

The first try ? which Dodcl converted, came 'from Smiley who crossed the line a few minutes after the kick off. \\\ Wharewera came to light with the next shortly alter,, and M. Bluett followed, up almost immediately. The next try, a very snappy one came from Dod<l, who intercepted a Hue pass and the next moment was over the line. Lawson converted. Lawson obliged a few minutes later again with a runaway try from midfield which Harawira converted while the final try before half time' was by Wharewera. The Second Spell The second spell was 50 per cent, slower than the first and degenerated into more or less haphazard football i} with both teams obviously disinterested . Half time was no longer than was necessary for the teams to changeover and the second spell was only fifteen minutes. In that time, Simpson scored two tries and Lawson converted one for Paroa, bringing the final score to 32—0 in Paroa's favour. Teams were as iindfer:—■ Paroa: B. P. Ratably T. Simpson, C. Bluett,'m. D. Kahui, D. Taylor, J. Dodd, G. Hakopa, T. Riini, T. Brown, H. Smiler K. Law*son. Poroporo: P. Merito, B. Nuku ) Pani, Waaka, R. Nuku, Massey, Hurst,' Paul, B. Mer^ ito M.' Nuku K. King', R. Taylor, <) ■> ' Hikitene. Mr J. JVhitehead was referee.

JUNIORS PAROA v POROPORO The Paroa v Poroporo match resulted in a win for Paroa by 8 points to 3. As far as football went, the game was only the ball finding the line far more than it should have throughout the whole match. With the exception of one or two half-hearted forward Poroporo was on the defensive for the whole of the first but managed to hold their own better after halftime. Pax'oa's play was, in general nothing startling the forwards mainly working as individuals instead of as a pack. The. back line ccrtainly outclassed Poroporo's but displayed nothing like the handling or cor ordination it did against Waikite. Scores for Paroa were, registered by Hakopa and Tawa (T. Riini converted) whilst Poroporo's 3 points came from a penalty kick put neatly over the bar by Hudson. Mr J. Whitehead refered.

THE HURUNUI SHIELD GAME R A NGI TALK I OUTCL ASSK D The unbeaten Rangitailu lil'teen failed to lift the Hurunui Shield from the Opotiki holders in a rugged game at Opotiki last Saturday. The match which was before a large and enthusiastic attendance

rrom all parts of the Eastern Bay, was not what could be described as an exhibition of good football. Overkeenness spoilt the best openings for both sides, and there was an almost total absence of that clean scientific Rugby for which the average New Zealand crowd longs. During the course of the game three Rangitaiki men were injured and had to retire. The game however wa& Opotiki's from an early part in the game and as the second half hardened up the outcome, was obvious. A i'ull and detailed report of the play will appear in next issue.
