A BUSY MONTH

PONGAKAWA RABBIT BOARD

INSPECTOR'S REPORT

I In his monthly report to the July meeting of the Ponga'kawa Rabbit Board ? Inspector C. H. Davis stated as under:— Since the last meeting we have worked on the following places:— Messrs Harty Watson Park Bevan, Withy S\van i Le Leivre } Ham, 'pough ' Bak r er ? Wright, i>al WashHalcombe Johnston Cato, Nettlingham Hastie M. Magee ? Thompson Riddell ? Kennon, Kane Dixon Levin Lichenstein Tumbull Holt Eivr * '} » 9 '

ers, Drabble, R. John, Waller, Blacky Downey, Dohnt Mikkleson' Browns Caverhill and Goldsmith, Crown Lands in Murupara and Valley Roacl Areas ? Native Lands Murupara and Awakaponga. We have poisoned 10,300 acres and fumigated 9100 acres using 5731b5. Phosphorised Pollard and 651bs. Cyanogas. With a few exceptions rabbits have been taking the poison well. On where we have had poor results with poison ? we generally find that rabbits have been continually disturbed by dogs just prior to poisoning. In the Manawahe and Pongakawa areas young rabbits are making an appearance. This points to an earlier breeding season than we experienced last year, t have shifted two men to the Rotoma end of the Manawahe district to a house kindly lent us by Dr. Appleby. From here they will work all properties from the Lake to Holts. When we have the rabbiters camp erected in Manawahe I would recommend paying one man mileage for a car as I believe we could work this area to better advantage by do r ing so. Since last meeting I have inspected the Murupara area and found the improvement here to be better than we have had in any of our other areas. One man will remain here for another month, after which he will shift on t(y the. Rerewhakaitu district; another will continue with the Bush Road and Valley Road areas. During last week I inspected Messrs Bevans, Bowditch O'Rourke, and John's places ancl found here a wonderful .improvement 90 per cent of the burrows that we have fumigated still being closed. As rabbits on. State Forest lands in

| the Valley Road area were showing up *1 have requested, the Mr to poison this area and he has put a man on to this job. As we are now poisoning Crown lands in he Murupara area ? it would be good polisy if the State Forest country adjoining was also poisoned In conclusion I wish to thank all ratepayers who have co-operated by shifting stock and putting camps at our disposal.
