Society during the brief period of its existence. At a general meeting held in May of last year the draft constitution and rules of the Society were submitted and adopted. In order to stimulate interest in the work of the Society ? Mr E. R. Dillicar prer sented three prizes for competition open to scholars attending our public schools in respect of an essay entitled "How Best to Beautify Whakatane." The result was gratify-
ing inasmuch as a number of entries were received which contained interesting and informative ideas that may be made use: of in the near future. To reward meritorious essays outside the three prize winners three consolation prizes were given, The work undertaken by the Society must be limited by the amount of funds available for its purposes. A commencement was made by planting trees in the Borough Reicreation Reserve £it the Heads f in planting a number of trees and shrubs along the foreshore and around the Children's Playground in the Strand and a row of cherry trees in the Domain. The grow T th generally has been satisfactory and the result should enhance the attractive appearance of these localities. The thanks of the Society are due to those members of the public who have made donations to its funds ? to Mrs F. J. Appleby for a gift of cherry trees planted in the Domain, to the Whakatane Borough Council for the use of a meeting room and to the "Beacon" for publicity in its columns. It is to be hoped that there will be even greater assistance and support forthcoming from local residents in the future to enable the Society to achieve its purpose of beautifying and rendering more attractive our public streets and reserves.
