WHAKATANE BRANCH MEETS ADDRESS BY PRESIDENT A meeting of the Whakatane Branch of the N.Z. Educational In-. st.itlite was held at the Whakatane High School last Tuesday evening to meet the President of the InstiMr A. Hanna, of Dunedin who is making a tour of the East Coast Waikato, and Bay of Plenty districts accompanied by the secretary, Mr G. A. Ashbridge. Mr A. Breward the branch president, presided over a fairly good attendance of members and welcomed the visitors. The theme of Mr Hanna's address was the deficiencies of the present education system—matters which would have to be remedied, before New Zealand teachers could give an education worthy of the name— large classes antiquated and cramped buildings poor equipment, lack of library facilities and text liooks and the need for a permanent staff of relieving teac.he.rs. He also mentioned the physical and moral harm that New Zealand children were suffering in consequence of unsuitable film and radio programmes, and appealed for wider co-operatipn from parents to minimise this. Mr Ashbridge spoke on certain domestic matters that had presented difficulties to members such as J the delay in the publication ot' the Teachers Register, grading and superannuation. The visitors were warmly thanked lor their attendance .
