CELEBRATING THE PEACE

DISTRICT PLANS ANTICIPATED, BOROUGH COUNCIL'S MOVE y In a letter to the County Council 1 last week, the Whakatane Town i Clerk stated that the Mayor (Mr B. 1 S. Barry) was calling a meeting of - Borough residents to be held i>t S f p.m. on Thursday sth July at the County Council Chambers with the f object of setting up an organisation ■ to finalise arrangements for 1 the iit- : ting celebration of final peace when ! this; was declared. An invitation ; was extended to the Chairman and : to other County representatives. The j meeting might wish to join with the County in placing the celebrations on a district basis ? or feeling within the County might incline towards co-operation with the Borough in celebration arrangements. It was hoped therefore that the meeting would be. as fully representative as possible of the various interests. Cr Lux ton said he took it that the Borough wanted to avoid the 'mixup' which occurred last time when V-E Day was declared. If everything was finalised it meant simply -putting a match to it. The Chairman: That may be alright providing we are not regimented to a certain type of celebracion as the Government dictated last time! r ' Cr Leslie: I think it is our own 1 business in any case, and it wouldn't 1 matter if we beat the gun in spite 1 of the Government. The Council elected Cr Luxton to i attend the and also s>ug- c gested that an invitation be extend- < ecT to the sixteen Patriotic Inter- i zone Committees throughout the s district.
