RUGBY FOOTBALL

SENIOR MATCH OUTCLASSED

PAROA DEFEATS WAIMANA

Three footfall matches two junior ancl one senior were played at the Whakatane Domain on Saturday afternoon. The junior games although still somewhat ragged showed much improvement on those played at the beginning of the season. On the other hand in comparison, the senior match was slow and generally unexciting few patches of really good football being seen. The Senior Field In the senior game played Paroa scored an easy win over Waimana by 14 points to 3. Teams were fairly evenly matched although odvantage went to Paroa by way of their back line which displayed better passing than that of their opponents. Tai lliini's score was perhaps tliu most spectacular. During a forward rush by the Paroa pack he gained control, swept round, the opposing defence men and completed his run from the 25 yard mark up the sideline scoring mid-way between the post and the corner Hag. A shot at goal from the lield just inside the 25 line by C. Wells. (Paroa) just missed the bar but was a good attempt. Scoring for Paroa were. J. Dodd t Tai Riini (2) and Taylor. Dodd also converted Riini's first, try. Waimana's three points were gained by D. Boynton who converted a penalty very nicely from a point almost on the quarter ten yards in; from the side line. Junior Matches As stated previously, the. Junior Paroa v Poroporo and Whakatane v Waimana far outclassed the senior game as regards football the Paroa v Poroporo match being perhaps the best exhibition of the day.

In this match, which resulted in a win for Poroporo by 11 hard earned points to solid pack work interspersed with passing rushes by the back lines were .the order of the day. These were unfortunately on the main spoilt, by the greediness of some of the players. Several certain tries on both sides were spoilt through not letting the ball out to the wing. Both full backs m Home (Paroa) and Huta (Poroporo) were very safe, while M. Tiepa was in the limelight more, than once by way of the method in which he stopped opposing dribbling rushes. This he did by diving in on the ball, scooping it, up and dodging his way back upfxeld. The first try for Poroporo was scored by K. Corner. Tiepa converted. T. Ijer crossed the

line to bring Poroporo's points to eight while the remaining try was gained by Hudson. A try by T. Brown which was converted by T. Riini gave Paroa their only five points. Whakatane v Waimana Whakatane defeated Waimana by 12 points to ti. The game was even at first but Whakatane gained the upper hand as the match progressed. Eric Hunt scored two of the tries for the home team while the. other was accounted for by George Goodall. A penalty kick converted by S. Ueaumont brought the score to 12. For Waimana T .Rangi scored both tries 5 neither being converted. SCOREBOARD WHAKATANE UNION Seniors: Paroa beat Waimana 11—3. Juniors: Poroporo beat Paroa 11 —5; Whakatane beat Waimana 12—6.
