FLAGS WORTH £50 STOLEN
WHAKATANE businessmen are today vowing that they will not easily be persuaded to decorate their premises with bunting and flags to mark national occasions in future. The reason for their, attitude is that during the two days holiday to mark the signing of the European armistice, the. larrikin element in the town was responsible for the removal of something over £50 worth of flags from shop fronts and verandahs. The thefts did not stop at the despoilation of the shops, for valuable flags were removed from private homes and from parked cars. Whilst there is every reason to anticipate a display of high spirits on such an occasion, there is no possible excuse for actions which amount to nothing more than straight out thieving, and culprits should in future be treated as such.
